When trials come whom do we trust?

3/29/2020

Times like these expose our weaknesses and I think our strengths and they reveal who we look to and in whom trust when great trials come.

This past Saturday, March 28 the message of this blog was presented on a facebook live post as part our 516 Daily devotional at my church – Community Bible Church in Baton Rouge. My husband Ken and I sang together at the beginning and end of the video and Kathy Rumfellow joined us on the violin. If you would prefer to listen rather than read, you can find it on our Restore ministries facebook page. You will also find the video link  at the end of this blog.
For thoses of you who have already listened, I would ask that you consider using the prayer for our medical providers found below as a guide in the weeks ahead.

I have been so grateful for the doctrinal series study I have been doing this week with my church. This week’s lesson was Who is Jesus. In these days of the Corona virus we need to be reminded of who Jesus is!

As I read one of the Scripture lessons from Isaiah 9:6-7, I was struck by how many times I have sung those words in choir pieces in church since I was a teenager. They are planted deep in my heart. Most of the songs are from my memories of Christmas music and that’s most often when we hear these verses read.
But I find it so powerful for these days.

Read this beautiful description of Christ, the Messiah
Picture
This is such powerful truth!

There are so many Scriptures where we see the fullness of the character of Christ revealed – He is the Word, truth, light, Deliverer, Savior, the Hope of the world, the Son of God and yet because he lived on earth, he understands our humanity. He has compassion for our human struggles and the power to help usovercome them as we are face this pandemic.

As I’ve texted, emailed, and been on Facebook much more than usual with friends and family over the last two weeks, I’ve noticed that there is a common thread in our struggles, but we handle them differently.
We all have a need.

Those of us who struggle with anxiety feel our chests tighten and have trouble sleeping more than usual.
We need peace to invade our souls. Isaiah 9 tells us that in Christ we have the
Prince of Peace.

Those of us who seem to thrive on the constant running and the doing may feel lost and useless in the sudden stillness. We may feel trapped in our homes as we are all faced with the struggle to find a new routine for our days.

We need a sense of purpose. Jesus has work for us to do in these days.
It may be to rest in His presence, to pray. He may give you an opportunity to share your faith.

In Christ we have a Wonderful Counselor, full of wisdom who can guide us.

Those of us with family and friends far away wrestle with a longing in our hearts to physically touch and see that they are ok. That has certainly been my struggle as my oldest daughter, son-in – law and granddaughters live far from us in South Carolina and my youngest daughter in is the hot spot of the world right now, New York City.

Maybe like me, you need to be reminded that although we are separated from one another we can never be separated from the love of God.

We need a comforter.  In Jesus we have the Good Shepherd of our souls.

Those of you who have lost income or retirement investments, or jobs may face fear of the future. I’ve heard that fear so many times as I’ve spoken with family and friends.

We need a provider. We need to believe that Jesus will supply what we truly need because He will. He sees the darkness that you face and He is the light to lead you through it.

Those of you with all the little ones suddenly at home wonder if you will find the strength and creativity to manage the schoolwork, the meals, the fun, the noise level. Maybe you feel inadequate or insecure as suddenly you’re challenged in so many areas of your life.
Or some of you have grown children home who haven’t lived with you for years. How do you manage that?
Or maybe you are lonely as you face isolation in your home for so many weeks.

You need to know there is a source of strength and creativity beyond yourself.
Isaiah 9 tells us one of the names of our Savior is Mighty God.
Surely the Creator of this beautiful universe in which we live and in whose image we are made can supply the creativity to survive and even thrive in these days.

And when you are weary or lonely,  remember His words of comfort...

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 NIV

I think all of us struggle some with fear of this disease that threatens us. We are fearful for those we know and love who suffer from it or face the danger of it in the medical field day after day.
We need a Healer and a Deliverer.
We need to look to Jesus who never changes even though the situation with this virus is constantly changing every day.
PicturePicture of me and mom last Thanksgiving.
That reality came home to me especially in the last days through conversations with my mom’s nurses. My mom is 91 and has severe Alzheimer’s disease and lives in a nursing home here in town. My sister and I typically visit her very often during the week, but now in this pandemic she can have no visitors and it’s been 19 days since I’ve been able to see her. About ten days ago we got a call that mom had developed a deep cough, fever and pneumonia and they were doing a test on her for corona virus. It was a very long 5 day wait for the results. During that time, we were checking with the nurses every day. But then one day I got a call from the nurse. I asked her if mom was fearful. She paused and then broke a little and said, “Yes, she is. She can’t understand or remember why she must be in isolation. She is flinging out at us and constantly tries to get out of her bed and then falls. This is not your mom, Kathy…it is the disease and we are trying to manage her pain." Mom had fallen a few weeks earlier and broken several ribs so the pain from such a deep cough had to be brutal.
I told her that I had been praying for the nurses and aids caring for all the residents and asked if I could pray for her. She said yes and told me a little of her own struggle. Her mom was in a nursing home in much the same situation in another state and yet she was not able to be with her because she was caring for my mom in her job here. After we prayed, she said, “I knew I was supposed to call you. Now I have a sense of peace." It was such a sweet time.
We finally received news that mom’s test came back negative. Praise the Lord and thank you for all of the prayers so many of you lifted up.
I began sharing prayers with her by text and told her that I would ask others to pray for all the medical professionals during this uncertain, difficult time as we watch the news of health providers crying out for help and laboring to care for those stricken with this disease in our world.
I wrote out the prayer below and sent it to her. Please consider joining with me in praying for the doctors, nurses, and medical providers. You may want to use the prayer below as a guide.

Prayer for our doctors, nurses and medical providers
Christ Our Healer and Savior

The brokenness and sickness in our world is staggering.
The hurting people, Your beloved, are lining the halls,
filling the hospital beds and waiting in long lines for drive thru testing,
in desperate need of supplies and quarantining
in our nursing homes and at home.
There is fear and worry and pain that is real and it is overwhelming.

Father we pray that you would cover them with your protection
and your grace. May their hands of service be an extension of your mercy.
Fill them with strength and compassion.
May they find their rest in You Father.

Lord, for those suffering from COVID-19,
the medical providers are the human face of compassion
when families and friends cannot come near.
Let their presence bring comfort and healing not only physically,
but emotionally as patients are frightened and suffering.
Give them a capacity to love and offer hope and fill them with wisdom
as they make decisions to provide the best care for patients.
.
May their hands and minds be skilled and may they look to You
in these days as the Great Physician.

Please protect them from this contagious virus and provide the protective supplies that they need to minister healing and grace
without risk to their own health and protect their families.

Lord, we ask that you by your mighty power
would stop the devastating spread of this virus.
May we turn our hearts and souls and look to you in this crisis.
Unite our hearts in prayer.
We ask for Your mercy to rain down on us Lord and we bless your Holy name.
In the powerful name of Jesus,
Amen

Psalm 103:2-4
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy.
If there is one thing that we have all learned it is that we are not in control.
Aren’t you grateful that Jesus is never out of control?
The child born to us, our Savior is the Everlasting Father,
and He is righteous and just.
We need to find our rest in His presence so that we can hear His voice, trust in His sovereignty and know in the depths of our hearts that He reigns over it all and longs to bring us to a place of restoration.
Jesus will hold us fast and secure – even the COVID 19 pandemic.

There is a wonderful song of comfort called He will Hold Me Fast that is an old hymn written by Ada Habershon and put to new music by Matt Merker. It has become almost my anthem during the last few years as I have faced a lot of loss in the death of dear friends and family, my mother's loss of memory and a long season of personal illness. I find that I keep returning to it over and over and it has been on my heart in the last few weeks.

This is the Jesus who holds us –Son of God, Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
Will we choose to place our hope in Jesus, the anchor for our souls?
Will we surrender and believe that God has a purpose for us in this crisis?
He will sustain us. He will hold us fast.
May the Savior in His mercy protect and sustain you and hold you fast
during these days.
Kathy

In these days...Give Me Jesus

3/15/2020

In these days what will we do with our fears about the future, our confusion over conflicting stories in the media, our worries about our families, our stress about the financial security in these uncertain times? It is easy to live in the illusion that we are in control, and then we are suddenly faced with adversity, a job loss, an illness, or a virus that changes that landscape of our lives.

If there is one thing that we have learned it is that we are not in control.
The good news is…We have a God who is!
When we learn to let go of the illusions that we hold onto so tightly, we may discover  a deeper faith, a greater trust and find instead a deep encounter with Jesus

What is your story? We all have one. Of course, it is changing daily as the coronavirus makes its way across our world and we try to find ways to stop it.

I have a daughter living in New York City and found myself canceling my trip that I had planned this weekend to celebrate her birthday. We had tickets to a Broadway show and several gatherings planned to celebrate.  I had been cooking all her favorite dishes to freeze and bring with me. I have not been for a visit in 2 ½ years. And then her teary phone call came with these words, “Mom, I just don’t think you should come. I don’t want you to take the risk with your history of respiratory issues and the city is changing every day.” And so….I canceled. I must respect her wishes, her discernment. As the week unfolded I saw she was right,  but my heart is there, and she still travels on the subway to her nanny job. Her other job has ceased. Her voice students are cancelling. My brave girl....

My oldest daughter lives in Greenville, SC with her husband and two young daughters. They have finally just bought their first house. Her husband’s work depends on him going into the schools which have just been closed. The question lingers, how will this affect the income for this young family? Of course, the necessary closing of schools is affecting the nation in so many ways.

My mom is in a nursing home with severe Alzheimer’s disease. Visitation is now not allowed for her protection. I was actually sitting with her rubbing her neck in the large gathering room with the residents when the announcement came on the TV that the Louisiana Nursing Home Association was recommending no visitors. With her facility now on lockdown. I am left to pray for her and her medical providers. If you find yourself in that position, below is a link to a wonderful prayer for Medical Providers that I have been using to guide me. You will find the link below.

My husband is a worship leader at our church. With the no mass gathering mandate, we are all making adjustments to determine the best way to minister to the body of Christ.

I have friends who have had major loss of income already as I'm sure many of you are experienceing or expecting.

And so, what will be our response?

Well, unfortunately, I can tell you I have done a lot of stress eating!
All my favorites – cheese (Havarti with dill) and crackers, ice cream (Jamoca Almond Fudge is my favorite and Ken made a run for me), roasted pecans and peanut butter pretzels. So now you know some of my vices! Miraculously, I managed to resist my temptation to buy my favorite dark chocolate covered almonds in the grocery store yesterday. I almost caved in, but feared I would lose my place in the lines that were extending down the aisles at Trader Joes – a hidden blessing. I was also distracted by the women next to me who had lined her shopping cart with Bellini bottles! I wondered if she having a party? That didn't seem like a good idea.  Was she just totally stressed out about not being able to get toilet paper? That shelf was empty. I had already checked. Don't you wish you had stock in toilet paper?...and hand sanitizer and bottled water? I thought maybe she needed a hug but... keep your distance. As my mind continued to wander I perused the carts in line. Most were filled to the brim. In Louisiana, we are clearly in hurricane coronavirus mode. But several stood in these long lines with just a bouquet of flowers and I wondered... In my distraction, the line had moved forward and it was no longer a possibility to get my dark chocolate covered almonds!
Ok, this really needs to stop!

In a much more productive, life-giving way - I have also prayed and searched the Scriptures for direction and wonderful verses of hope. Truly we are in a time of testing, faith, and perseverance. In these days we will come to know the reality of  what or whom we truly trust.
Picture
What could we do with this change in our routines?
  • It is an opportunity to be in earnest prayer for our leaders, those in the health care industry, those who are ill and isolated, the countries that have been so severely hit by the coronavirus, and those affected by loss of work.
  • Perhaps families will actually sit down and have meals together rather than picking up fast food as they run from activity to activity. So light a candle and celebrate!
  • It can be a time to get creative, to laugh and have fun with your family or a friend.
  • It could be an opportunity for meaningful conversations with those we love, those in isolation, and those who need Jesus. Look for opportunities for deep spiritual conversations that may arise in times like these.
  • It can be a time to soak in the Word in personal study.
  • This is a  time to sit with our Jesus and let Him calm our fears.
He is our peace in the storm!
He is our strength, our hope,
the One in whom we can place our trust.

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast,
Because they trust in you. Isaiah 23:6
We must look for God at work within us and through us. As I write, I look out the window into my backyard and see the family of my backyard neighbors working in the yard together. I have never seen this!
  • Instead of constantly scrolling through your media feeds, choose to take some time to read a great spiritual book or listen to wonderful teaching online if your church services are cancelled.
  • You could listen to worship music that speaks of God’s truth, proclaims who Jesus is and helps you rest in Him and praise His name.
  • Consider taking a long praise walk in the beauty of God’s creation.                       I took a break from writing this afternoon and took a walk in our garden. A year ago we planted a new rose on our arbor. It is called the Peggy Martin (Katrina) rose. This rose got it's name because after the waters receded during Katrina, Peggy Martin and her husband went back to their home, shrimp boat and garden of 450 roses that had been destroyed. Her parents perished in the storm. It seemed they had lost it all.  As they cleared the blackened debris from the flood waters she suddenly spotted a bit of green. Only one rose had survived and it has come to be called the plant of promise. Money from it's cuttings have been raised to restore gardens along the gulf coast. I have waited a year for this rose to bloom and show her glory. It survived the spring floods of last year in our garden that threated to wash her away and now she is a beautiful reminder of promise and hope!
Picture

  • I have put together a spotify playlist entitled God, our Hope to encourage you as you listen and sing along, or  if you are quarantined and can't get out maybe this will help you focus on who God is in the midst of this storm in our lives. You will find the link below.
  • Make a list of some productive things you can do in your home if you are stuck there and do them.
  • Take a sabbath break - a rest from technology and focus on Christ. Do something that feels life-giving, fun, creative and restoring to you.
  • Be kind, compassionate and prayerful. Be merciful, helpful, loving.
  • Ask the Lord to help you to be a reflection of the character of Christ in all of your interactions.
This is a time when we must make our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. We must learn to rest secure in the Truth. There are so many unknowns to this battle.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Cor. 10:5

I sought the Lord and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4

There is real loss in the everyday life to which most of us have grown accustomed. Many of you are having to make hard choices and changes in the way you live your life. Anxiety, fear and stress are real issues that many of us are facing. It is difficult to live in the midst of so much that is unknown. We must learn to take our fears, our illusions, our anxiety and our suffering to the One who can give us hope and can lead us and help us persevere. I have been reading through the book of James in the last two months. What a great preparation for these days of testing and trial!

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  James 1:2-4

What we believe about God informs the way we live and the decisions we make.
When we cry out for Jesus, we cry out to the One who holds the answers to our questions because we are seeking the one thing needful. In the depths of our hearts we must know the character of God that alone will sustain us.

When I find myself in a season of being overwhelmed, stressed or in the depths of pain or loss, I need to be reminded of who it is that satisfies the deep longings of my soul. There is a beautiful reading and song that has helped to carry and sustain me through some of the most difficult seasons of my life in the past. It is called Give Me Jesus.
Focusing on the character of Christ settles my heart and it will settle yours.
 He is Sovereign.
He holds the answers to all our questions, our fears, our hopes and our dreams.

Our hearts desire must be for Jesus. Our greatest delight must be found in Him.

Below is the link to the song and readings of Give Me Jesus that I offered in worship at the end of my teaching at our Restore Winter Gathering. The Readings come from the book Give Me Jesus by Anne Graham Lotz and the song is from Give Me Jesus by Fernando Ortego. I didn’t realize how timely these words would be for us in these days just a few weeks later.

Please listen below to these powerful words that proclaim the character, power and hope that we have in Jesus as Savior, Lord and King of Kings!

This song and reading is the cry of my heart.
I pray it will be yours.

Wash over us Lord Jesus and protect us in your mercy,
Cover us by your grace, and empower us to be vessels of your love.
In these days....Give Me Jesus!

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.   Romans 8:38-39

One Thing I Know

2/29/2020

It is always a great joy to welcome Margaret Kemp as a guest blogger for Restore Ministries Monday Musings. In the crazy world in which we live it is easy to feel off balance if we are not standing firm on what we know to be true. Margaret shares her testimony here with such beautiful life-giving words. I'm so grateful for her heart, her faith, her friendship, and her willingness to serve Restore with her gifts.

Why does God allow injustice?
What about the Hindus and the Buddhists and the other religions?
What if I’ve got it all wrong? What if everything I believe is a lie?

I sometimes find it hard to stay anchored in the truth while living in a world that’s swirling with chaos, confusion, and turmoil. I want to remain steady in my faith, but different worldviews, philosophies, and opinions attempt to rock my boat. Doubts and questions seep into my consciousness and threaten to capsize my faith.
I don’t have all the answers to the tough questions.
But, like the blind man whose story is recorded in the gospel of John chapter 9, I can say this:

“One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25 ESV

I was born into a church-going family. As a child, I believed that good people go to heaven and bad people go…well, to the other place. So I tried not to fight with my siblings or disobey my parents. Invariably, I failed. My sister’s little finger is probably still crooked because of the time I slammed it in the door. She may even have scars on her arms from a my all the times fingernails dug into her skin. (It’s a wonder my sister and I are still friends.)  I still have a scar on my forehead, a result of a gash in the head I received when jumping on the bed---- after my mother explicitly told me not to.

As I got older, the sins I confessed were different, but my struggles were the same. I tried harder, but, well, you know what happened. I wasn’t perfect, but I was better than some. I hadn’t murdered or robbed a bank.
But when I was a freshman in college, Jesus came walking into my life.  I didn’t see Him at first, but I heard. I heard a girl in my dorm playing guitar and singing about Jesus. I thought I knew Him from Bible stories, pictures on the Christmas cards, and statues, but I was still in the dark about so many things.

Susan, the girl with the guitar, soon began including me in activities with her friends, and one evening she invited me to a Sunday night event at the Student Union.  Susan’s boyfriend Dennis was playing in the band that was performing.  I sat in a metal chair in the Union’s ballroom, nervously tapping my foot to the bluegrass music. I politely laughed at the corny jokes (like a door prize that consisted of a 14-carrot—yes, carrot-- ring). I listened with skepticism to testimonies of how Jesus changed lives. I’d come to hear the band, not to alter my beliefs.

Afterwards, as I hung around waiting for Susan, a girl with a raspy voice asked if she could explain a little booklet called The Four Spiritual Laws. Reading through a booklet seemed less awkward than standing around alone, so I thought, why not?

My new friend was struggling with laryngitis, but she was determined to share the gospel. As we read together through the little pages, I was hit with a Bible verse I’d never heard before.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB

Suddenly light bulbs came on in my brain. Of course I could never be good enough to deserve heaven because I could never be perfect. If I could enter heaven by doing good works, that would be cause for boasting. Salvation was a gift.
I had been blind to the grace that God offered to me through Jesus. But God in His mercy orchestrated events so that I could learn the truth. His Holy Spirit illuminated that truth so I could understand.
I had been blind. Now I see.

The blind man in John Chapter 9 was thrown out of the temple because he spoke of Jesus. Later, Jesus approached him and asked if he believed in the Son of Man.

“‘Who is he, sir? The man asked. ‘Tell me so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.’ Then the man said, ‘Lord, I believe.’ And he worshiped him.” John 9:38

Like the blind man, I believed in Jesus., Though I still don’t have all the answers, my life has been a journey to get to know Him better. He has never let me down.

When confusing circumstances stir up doubts, when critics confront you with clever arguments, when you don’t have the answers, you can fall back on what you do know. Remind yourself of the little miracles you’ve seen, the times when you knew God was answering prayer. Think back to that time when God changed your life, and remind yourself of the one thing you do know:

I was blind, but now I see.

Winter Gathering Reflections

2/16/2020

There is still a lingering buzz in the air about the Winter Gathering, a smile on our face, warm feelings of love and appreciation and a few more items to place into storage.  All I can think is, how good God is and how he chooses to pour His lavish love and blessings out on those who diligently seek Him. We had close to 130 women from across five states who were just looking for a place to gather with other women to find solace from the chaos, demands, and busyness of everyday life.  We all chose to seek Christ as our One Thing, this past weekend and He met with us in a mighty way.  Our prayer remains that you continue to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple. (Psalm 27:4 Amplified)

What a blessed time together as we truly feasted on the gifts and talents in a wondrous display offered before our Lord and for one another with visual art, music, dance, and teaching God’s Word.  Another beautiful picture of the body of Christ, coming together to help provide an atmosphere of rest, beauty, and worship.  Thank you to all who gave of yourself, your resources, and your time to help make this event special and memorable.  Lives have been changed and transformed forever!  That was our prayer for you from the beginning.  What a precious time it was together lingering on our knees at the feet of Jesus.

YouTube Link Containing a few highlights:  https://youtu.be/lRvNL7q1spE

Sometimes the Lord plants the seed of a dream in your heart and then gives you the privilege of seeing it come to life. The Restore Winter Gathering last weekend was the fulfillment of a dream for me and our ministry. We came as women from many different states, churches and backgrounds filled with desire. We chose to seek the Lord and dwell in His presence, and He met us in ways beyond what we could have ever imagined.

It was a beautiful weekend of beholding Jesus as women gathered to hear His heart for us as we studied His Word in the One Thing Scriptures. We brought our offerings of worship as we sang from the depths of our souls to the One who alone is worthy.

We beheld His glory in dance proclaiming the power of His Name. We shared communion at the King’s table in remembrance of the sacrifice the Savior made for us. We fellowshipped and feasted with old and new friends.

We saw windows of His beauty and wonder in the gallery of art and live painting by our guest artists. We entered into Scripture through drama as the characters of Mary and Martha were portrayed.

We heard words of wisdom from a panel of women as we brought our faith questions about how to make seeking Jesus as our One Thing a reality in our lives. We heard testimony from a Shepherd’s daughter about the love and grace of God that carries us through the deepest pain and struggles.

We proclaimed Jesus as the One and Only who could satisfy the deep longings of our souls above the distraction and trappings that often overwhelm us and set our hearts to press on in Jesus Name.

We ended our weekend in worship at the feet of Jesus.

Our heart is filled with gratitude for the many men and women who gave so generously of their time, talent and resources to make this weekend possible. May the seeds of this dream continue to bear fruit in the days ahead and in the generations represented at our Gathering. Like Mary, anointing the feet of Jesus, may we choose sitting at His feet as the one thing needful in our lives for He is our greatest treasure.

For those of you who were unable to attend, we are so sorry that you missed being with us.  After the video is edited (this is a lengthy process-prayers appreciated) and photos received, we will make portions of them available to you on our website along with our teaching notes.  Please be sure to take advantage of The One Thing 2019 fall Bible Study to further your study of the One Thing Scriptures.  Visit: https://www.restore-ministries.net and go to The One Thing Home Study tab in the menu.  Enter Password:  1thing!

Currently, we believe that God is laying a few new things on our heart as we minister through Restore.  We covet your prayers as we faithfully seek His will.  We don’t want to rush ahead of Him, drag behind Him, or divert in any direction other than where God guides.  This is how you can join with us.
  • Pray for us daily.  We both have husbands who need us, families with which to attend, other demanding jobs, and this ministry to maintain.  Pray for balance.  Pray for wisdom.  Pray for all the resources needed to help us implement our creativity for the Lord and minister to those who desire to be Restored.  You can also pray that we find a time and place for us to “retreat” so that we can be refilled in order to pour out again to you. Pray for the health of us and our families.

  • For those of you who love this ministry and who would feel led, please consider partnering with us with a monthly financial contribution.  We believe like Donal Tabb’s quote, "God’s will done in God’s way will not lack for God’s provision.”  God has always been faithful to meet our needs for every event and we are so very grateful.  We do have administrative costs to maintain the ongoing of this ministry.  As we seek future ways to minister, they too, require additional funds that are a monthly cost to us. Your contributions are solely for the ongoing mission of this ministry.  We are a Non-Profit Organization (501c3) and gifts to Restore Ministries is tax-deductible.
We are always in such awe of the sweet ways God chooses to bless us.  He often does it through you!  Thank you for attending, for your encouraging words, prayers, and the love you show toward us.  Your radiant faces are a testament to the many ways God met with you last weekend.  Don’t let it stop.  Press On toward the prize of the high calling of Jesus Christ.  Keep seeking and spending time at His feet, trusting Him and obeying.  Let Him be the ONE THING that your heart is set on.  He is the grandest treasure to cherish and adore!
Psalm 27:4
“One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.”

Above all, we are eternally grateful to our Savior Jesus who poured out His extravagant love and grace on us in such abundance!

To God be the Glory,

Seeking the One Thing?

1/19/2020

I love preparing for Restore gatherings whether they be home studies, retreats, teas, or large events!  When I say that I love it, what I really mean is that I love the way God chooses to bless my heart through preparation & study of His Word, collaboration between Kathy and I, and the excitement of watching the registrations come through.  Sure, all the little details of running a ministry can be overwhelming at times, but the result of what God does in my life FAR outweighs my contributions!

The act of "seeking" is forward movement for me.  Each year, I try to seek out a word of the year, phrase or sentence, along with a scripture verse to help me stay focused.  The end of December is usually when I begin praying and thinking about the perfect word.  This time, my word came quickly as did the verse.  It was as if God had ordered it up and sent it through Amazon Prime because before I gave much thought, it was already at the door of my heart!

"Fresh" is the word that God revealed!  Interestingly, it actually is anything that relates to fresh.  So this year, 2020, I have fresh vision! I want to seek out fresh everything, including my relationship with the Lord!  This really excites me because I'm a visionary by nature and love the whole brainstorming process along with thoughts of "what could be!"  It's the execution of fresh vision that often slows me down.  I get caught up in research, over ambition, and perfectionism!  I'm my own worst enemy. As I'm sharing my heart and thoughts with you today, I'm reminded again of my 2020 Scripture verse.  I actually giggled out loud when God brought to mind this verse with my word.  It's one that I associate with salvation but, for me this year, it's a reminder that "new" (or fresh) is constantly ahead of me...becoming or being made new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition
17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

NEW=καινὴ Is the Greek word for fresh, new, novel, unused.  I didn't actually realize that new and fresh was the same word until this blog today!
Are you seeking new and fresh this new year, too?

Maybe you want to declutter EVERYTHING, simplify and bring a little freshness back into your life.  Kathy and I know how hard it is to do this...it's something that we talk about every year and mostly with our home. We believe that we have found what will help make the journey more attainable and we'd like to share it with you February 7 & 8.

We are both super excited to share what God has placed on our heart.  We love you, ladies!  Our thoughts toward you and our prayers for you are handled with much love and care.  It has always been the mission of Restore to provide opportunities to awaken a passion and to restore the deepest yearning to know Christ more intimately.  Our Winter Gathering of Women is designed just for you.  We seek to minister to your heart and spirit, creatively and through the arts.  This weekend will be a feast for your soul as you take in the teaching from God's precious Word, drama, music, dance and visual art.   It is our prayer that you will SEEK to join us in the journey of Seeking The One Thing during our Winter Gathering for Women.  Watch our 1 min.  Please join us February 7 and 8, 2020 and invite a friend!

Maybe you are looking for a great way to start off in your faith journey this new year, or perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed and fatigued, longing for simplicity!  Haven’t you had the thought, “If I just knew one thing that would bring peace into the chaos of my life, I’d sign up for it!?”

Our heart is to encourage women to seek and behold Christ above all of the chaos that often takes over our lives. We’ll offer an oasis of rest and beauty for those who gather to focus their hearts and minds on Jesus and His Word.  Come and discover the rich truths the Scriptures hold for us as women seeking purpose and wholeness while drawing near in intimacy with Jesus.

It will be a fun weekend of teaching and incorporating all of the arts in worship including original drama, dance, music, poetry and visual art. Walk through the Gallery of Art displayed by local artists and enjoy dessert Friday evening.  Share breakfast and conversation with someone new during our Continental Breakfast on Saturday morning.

Shinier Christmas Packages!

12/23/2019

Our dear friend Margaret Kemp has graciously submitted her latest blog to us for the ending of our December blog posts.
Typically our holidays are filled with with excitement, anticipation, anxiousness feelings, or disappointment of plans gone sour.  When we choose to commit our ways to the Lord, our perspective is transformed and we live out the season in wonder, hope, and thankfulness.  Margaret shares her experiences that we hope will encourage your heart if your very own plans have also been shattered.  Be blessed as you read.

When Your Plans Are Shattered ~  Margaret Kemp

"Commit your way to the Lord. Trust also in Him, and He will do it." Psalm 37:5
One little phone call rocked my world.
Just a few hours before, I’d been delighting in the Christmas-in-July displays at the craft store. As surveyed each shelf stocked with red and green nostalgia, I started counting the days until my family’s Christmas celebration.
With one little phone call, all my holiday plans shattered like a shiny green Christmas ornament.
You’re not coming for Christmas?!  And your brother isn’t coming home either?!
I was the kid with the lump of coal in my stocking.
The Grinch was stealing my Christmas. Instead of hosting a big family gathering, my husband and I would be alone for the holidays.  I mulled over this dilemma. How could I express my disappointment without burning the bridges that would bring my family over the river and through the woods to our house for Christmas?
I vented to my husband, my friend, my sister. Then I talked to the Lord.
Instead of singing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” I hummed a different song in my head,
“All to Jesus I Surrender, I Surrender All.”
I searched the Bible for verses about surrender, and I was surprised by what I found.
I found “submit” and “obey,” but “surrender” was only used when one army was defeated by another. Perhaps “surrender” is not the best word to explain what God wants from us. In my mind, “surrender” implies defeat. But yielding our will to God’s will doesn’t mean we're vanquished. We're not losers waving a white flag and surrendering our plans to God. Wecommit our plans.
“Commit your way to the Lord. Trust also in Him, and He will do it.” Psalm 37:5 ESV
The word which is translated “commit” is the Hebrew “galal,” which means to roll. I needed to roll up my plans and give them to the Lord.
“Galal” is also used in Proverbs 16:3 “Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established.” (ESV)
I discovered additional advice: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 ESV
We have hopes and dreams, but God has the final say. He lovingly orchestrates the events of our lives for our good and our growth.  Sometimes our plans are established just as we envisioned them, and sometimes He takes us in a different direction.

As I brought my sadness to the Lord, He reminded me of past disappointments…

the romance that ended…

the job I didn’t get…

goodbyes and rejections…

opportunities missed and treasures lost…

After every loss or unfulfilled desire, God gave me something better… a more loving relationship, a more suitable job, a closer connection to Himself.

Bitter disappointments can usher in God’s sweetest blessings.

But if we cling too tightly to our wish list, we can’t open our arms to receive God’s gifts. Maybe, like me, you’re dealing with disappointment. Let’s remind each other that we’re not defeated! We’re rolling up our wish list and offering it to the Giver of all good things, allowing Him to make changes and improvements for our benefit.

As it turned out, God’s plans were even better than mine. My husband and I were not going to be home alone for the holidays. Unexpected opportunities opened up, and we were the ones who would be traveling over the river and through the woods to spend Christmas with those we love.
If you didn’t get exactly what you were hoping for this year, keep your eyes open for a brighter, shinier package with your name on it.         ~Margaret Kemp

This Advent Journey

12/2/2019

It was five years ago at this very time that I wrote a blog called O Come, O Come...
I actually stumbled upon it a few weeks ago, and suggested to Kathy that I should write the blog this week and revisit what I wrote in 2014.  The Lord had awakened me with 3 words and a scripture verse on that 2014 night, and it seems that those words are still prevalent for me today!  This week in particular, another word was added to my list of thought provoking and powerful words, trust!  It's so sweet how the Lord offers little whispers in my ear to help me acknowledge His presence is always with me and to stop worrying. An email subscription was delivered in my inbox with a new painting from David Arms, an artist in Leipers Fork, TN a little village just outside of Franklin.  The title of the painting...Trust.  I really didn't think too much about it until a Cardinal flew up and perched himself right in my view on the limb of a low Japanese Magnolia branch. I was sitting on my sacred porch brining my cares to the Lord.
Picture
As I sat, pouring my heart out to the Lord in prayer, I discussed and repented over my expectations on certain areas in my life and how I had placed serious demands on meeting them.  I thought about my anxiousness and the anticipation of upcoming weeks.   Because I wasn't sure how to proceed with meaningful or productive preparation, or even restoration of what I had created within my self-absorbed flesh, I felt paralyzed and tried to overcome with self-motivated solutions.  It's never a good thing to set out a course in your own strength!  It's surely a recipe for deep hurt and disappointment.  Thank you Lord for turning my eyes and heart toward You, even if it took a little painting in an email subscription! The only way to stay focused on what is important is to trust His heart for our own personal life!  Interestingly, Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, anticipation, and preparation, and of longing.  My focus was just headed in the wrong direction as I had my own expectations, anticipations, and thoughts of preparation.  May The Holy Spirit speak to you through this blog as you may experience one or all of these 3-4 little words in the days ahead.
Wishing you a blessed Season of Advent,
Sherry

O Come, O Come...   a blog from 2014.

The process of writing for the Monday Musings blog has been quite interesting for Kathy and I each week as we try to reflect or share something to stir your heart, cause you to ponder, or awaken your passion to know Christ more intimately.  They are often created out of our own personal experiences.  Last weekend was so much fun as we escaped to the beach with our friend Suzanne.  We both were in much need of a personal Restore Retreat…it was way too short, but I was thankful!  I knew it was Kathy’s turn for the blog so I wasn’t too worried with thinking about what to write for my  week.   There were so many object lessons while at the beach, I felt sure that the Lord would choose to let me write on one of those.  Nope!  It’s another lesson in trusting Him because today is Sunday and it will be posted in the morning!  The only thing that seems to be hanging in my mind are three little words for which I had nothing…no meat and no scripture to back up these words!  Only the words!  You know, after reading many of my posts, God speaks to me in the most unusual ways!  So here I am, stuck with three words and an unseeingly unrelated scripture verse that awakened me at 3:33am!  Let’s see how God chooses to tie these things together!  Play this You Tube of the Piano Guys and let the music soar as you read the rest of the blog.  You can come back and watch the video later.
Picture
Here are my three words:  expect, anticipate, prepare

I was not certain how these words would play out in a blog until I got a little curious about a Christmas hymn, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  Brian and I put up some of our Christmas decorations yesterday while listening to Christmas music.  I love this 18th century plainsong, which actually derived from a poem dating back to the 5th or 8th century…its origin is unclear!  This Latin chant was used in a call and response fashion during the vespers, or evening, service during the 12th century.  I’ll share more about this special hymn later; let’s get back to these three words!   Expect, anticipate, and prepare… humm?  What should I expect, Lord?  Anticipate?  Isn’t that the same as expect?!  Prepare?  Prepare what?  Or prepare for what?  My mind began to wonder why these three words were clumped together.  I still didn’t know until I read this online while researching the hymn tune:  “Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing.”   Sunday, November 30, 2014, (today as I write) is the first day of Advent!  Talking about chill bumps!

Picture
What exactly is Advent?  As a kid growing up in a Protestant church, I really was unsure but knew it had something to do with a calendar or wreath with candles to mark out a few days before Christmas.  Advent means the arrival of a notable person, thing or event.  The word “advent” comes from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming” or “arrival.”  Advent begins four Sunday’s before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve.  This year, it begins today, November 30th.  Its focus is double as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in his first Advent and anticipate the return of Christ in his Second Advent.  It was the cry and prayer of the Israelites long ago as they long awaited the coming King.  It is my cry and prayer today, along with other believers, who await and are hopeful for His second coming.

 “Come, O Come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel!”
O Come, O Come Emmanuel is a Christian hymn for Advent; its origin is Latin as Veni, Veni, Emmanuel.
1 O come, O come, Immanuel,
and ransom captive Israel
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
Refrain:
Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel
shall come to you, O Israel.

2 O come, O Wisdom from on high,
who ordered all things mightily;
to us the path of knowledge show
and teach us in its ways to go. Refrain

3 O come, O come, great Lord of might,
who to your tribes on Sinai's height
in ancient times did give the law
in cloud and majesty and awe. Refrain

4 O come, O Branch of Jesse's stem,
unto your own and rescue them!
From depths of hell your people save,
and give them victory o'er the grave. Refrain
Picture
5 O come, O Key of David, come
and open wide our heavenly home.
Make safe for us the heavenward road
and bar the way to death's abode. Refrain

6 O come, O Bright and Morning Star,
and bring us comfort from afar!
Dispel the shadows of the night
and turn our darkness into light. Refrain

7 O come, O King of nations, bind
in one the hearts of all mankind.
Bid all our sad divisions cease
and be yourself our King of Peace. Refrain

                                         Psalter Hymnal (Gray)

Picture
“When we sing each verse of this hymn, we acknowledge Christ as the fulfillment of these Old Testament prophesies. We sing this hymn in an already-but not yet-kingdom of God. Christ's first coming gives us a reason to rejoice again and again, yet we know that all is not well with the world. So along with our rejoicing, we plead using the words of this hymn that Christ would come again to perfectly fulfill the promise that all darkness will be turned to light. That is the promise we hold to as we sing this beautiful hymn.” *

5th century Jewish Christians may have used this Advent hymn, since most of the themes are from the Old Testament. In the 9th century, the hymn was incorporated by the medieval church for use during Advent. During the week before Christmas Day, seven “Great ‘O’ Antiphons,” each of them in praise and wonderment (“O”) of an Old Testament name for the coming Messiah, were chanted.
In the 13th century, these antiphons were put in Latin hymn form, “Veni, Emmanuel,” and the “Rejoice” refrain was added. In Latin, the seven antiphons formed an acrostic from the opening words:

“O Sapienta” (Wisdom): In Christ are found “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3).

“O Adonai” (Lord of Might): He is called “Mighty God” (Is 9:6).

“O Radix Jesse” (Root of Jesse): After the kingdom of David, Jesse’s son, was cut down to a mere stump, Messiah will come and rebuild it into a kingdom made up of Jews and Gentiles (Is 11:1, 10).

“O Clavis David” (Key of David): The Son of David will have the authority to open and shut heaven’s gate (Is 22:22).

“O Oriens” (Light of the East): As the bright Morning Star and Dayspring, the Messiah will give light to all who walk in darkness (Nm 24:17; Is 9:2; John 8:12).

“O Rex gentium” (King of Nations): At last, when he returns, he will reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords (Is 9:6; Rv 19:16).

“O Emmanuel” (God With Us): He came down from heaven to dwell with us (Jn 1:14). And he will return to take us to his dwelling-place forever (Rv 21:3).

When read backwards, S-A-R-C-O-R-E becomes Ero Cras (“I will be there tomorrow”), anticipating the arrival of Jesus on Christmas Day, God’s answer to the petition, “O come, O come, Emmanuel.” So the verse we usually sing as the first was actually the climactic last of the seven antiphons sung on Christmas Eve.*

I found this very interesting and there is a little debate on the actuality of reading backwards and whether this was intentional or not! It is said that the Benedictine Monks arranged the verses in this fashion and that it went along with the season of Advent.  I often use acrostics or acronyms when I create so this isn’t too far out there for me to believe.  Kathy and I even began this ministry with a vision and connected its title with an acronym.

The titles for Christ, as indicated in each verse of the song, describe His character and nature.  They paint a beautiful portrait of what He has done, of this authority, and of His power.
“When we comprehend the rich meaning of the titles set forth in this song,
it is transformed from a simple Christmas carol into a powerful vehicle of praise
and a heartfelt prayer of anticipation.”  ~ Christopher & Melanie Lane
When you choose to study the names of God, you learn more about His character and about His deep abiding love for us, His chosen ones.  More knowledge and wisdom about our Savior awakens us to know and see Him more clearly.  Our eyes are opened and our worship becomes more passionate.  We long for Him to come again and we cry out, O Come, O Come…!

So those three little words (expect, anticipate, prepare) opened up a door for me.  Although I grew up not knowing much about Advent, and never observed it, I am experiencing a new excitement about the Christmas season.  I am also learning more about waiting which is at the heart of Advent!  Because it’s been such a tough year for me, many questions saturate my mind.  Along with these questions comes a season of waiting.  Waiting on the Lord to reveal answers, direction, and purpose.  These scripture verses also express the theme of Advent:
  • Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! (Psalm 27:14)
  • For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. (Psalm 62:5-7)
  • Those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. (Isa 40:31)
  • The one who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! (Rev 22:20)
  • I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. (Rom 8:18-25)
  • Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. (1 Peter 1:13)
You may be thinking, okay…those were the 3 words, but what about the scripture verse waking you at 3:33am?!
      It’s Psalm 98:4
                       “Shout to the Lord, all the earth;
break out in praise and sing for joy!”
With this beautiful carol I can shout and sing for joy! As I have closely studied the lyrics of this Advent hymn and learned of its origin, it has a new meaning for me.  It is with heartfelt hope, longing, and waiting that I too can sing O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  By the way, this week I am beginning a study by Ann Voskamp on the Greatest Christmas - The 4 Weeks of Advent!  This blog surely isn't coincidence and I didn't plan it this way!  It's simply God at work!
It's now 2019 and God is still at work and this blog was so timely for me! Again!
Maybe you are awaiting something and your heart is longing to meet God in an intimate way.  Remember, trust is at the heart of intimacy!  Immanuel has come to fill the world with His light and illuminate your eyes. May He dispel the shadows of darkness that try to hide His glory, deliver distress, and cause a restless and weary heart.  Break out in praise and sing for joy for the Lord is good and His faithfulness endures to all generations!
He will come to you if you but simply ask!  Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to you, O Israel.

The Path to Gratitude

11/20/2019

It’s hard to imagine that Thanksgiving week is here already. It seems the world around us has moved on to Christmas as the catalogs crowd my mailbox, the Christmas music plays everywhere, the stores and halls are decked out in all their festive decor, and my life is filled with rehearsals for our Christmas musical at church. I love Christmas!

But, I think it’s important to take time to pause and give thanks before the season overtakes or overwhelms us. Perhaps that practice of gratitude will help sustain us and teach us how to keep our focus on the joy and beauty of Christ to be found in these holiday seasons as we move forward into December.

Developing a heart of gratitude is a habit we must cultivate, a path we can choose to take. It requires us to be intentional.  Sometimes it surprises us to find that it is not just the big things, but often the little details of life that capture our gratitude.  In my own life when I don’t stop and take notice of the things and people for which I’m thankful, I miss those sacred grace moments God is pouring out to bless me. I miss the abundance. I miss the slowing down and taking in the treasures and the memories.

So this Thanksgiving holiday week I encourage you to take some time, reflect on events, details, people and circumstances of each day and write down at least three things for which you are grateful. Sometimes it’s even harder to do during the holidays. I began this practice years ago after reading Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts book and the Lord used it to prepare me for one of the most difficult seasons we ever faced as a family. Through the practice my perspective was transformed forever.

Often we find ourselves so consumed with the busyness of the holiday feasts that our souls come up empty.

It can be easy to have a heart of gratitude when life is going smoothly. But, what about the seasons of struggle, those hard places, the conflicts, those painful times when the path leads us into deep valleys?

Consider praying, “Father, help me see the beauty of Jesus in these moments, too. Help me find the heart of gratitude and joy even when it is buried deep.”  You may be surprised to find that joy and blessing can be found in your search for God in the deep, hard places where you couldn’t see Him before.

This Thanksgiving will be quiet for us. My children are not able to be with us, but will be home for Christmas. My sister is visiting her children and my mom is 91 and rarely knows who I am as her Alzheimer’s disease has progressed. Mom was a wonderful cook and quite the hostess in her day. I remember many fabulous Thanksgiving feasts in our home growing up and then my sister took over the tradition. Those years hold precious memories in my heart.

Mom made a home for us. A home that was so much more than the threshold we crossed, but a place where we felt loved. She filled that home with creative homemaking which always included delicious meals, fresh flowers from her garden, kindness, generosity, words of encouragement and wisdom that I cherish. I am so aware that not everyone had this blessing. Our home wasn't perfect, but I am deeply grateful for my mother and father who provided a home where I was nourished as a child growing up.

This week my husband Ken and I visited mom at the Thanksgiving dinner for the residents at the retirement/nursing home where she now lives. Mom needs 24/7 nursing care as she falls often, could easily wander off and get lost and has had pneumonia three times in the last year. Yet, despite her illness mom makes a gracious impact on this place. As we entered, several of the nurses who care for her came to tell me how she was very busy this morning instructing them as they all prepared for the feast. She showed them how to smooth out the table cloths and was quite taken with the beautiful napkins, ever the gracious hostess! It's clear she is loved in this place. That is who she is, and it shines even through her disease and blesses everyone in her midst.

As we visited and ate our dinner together, she smiled and grabbed my hand and I wondered. There seemed to be a glimmer of recognition in her eyes, as if she knew me. Perhaps it was the longing of my heart and imagination or was it a gift from the Father? It doesn’t really matter, I am thankful for those small moments with the woman who has so generously given life and love to my family. Her life and values have shaped me and left a legacy for which I am forever grateful.

After mom was diagnosed, I wanted to be sure we had her recipes and so I asked her to teach me how to cook her famous cornbread dressing and spinach madeleine. I knew in time those recipes in her head would be gone. I will be making her delicious dishes during the holiday in her honor, for even though she no longer knows me, I am still her daughter and the love and gracious hospitality she gave to our family has shaped us all.

My girls carry on her Thanksgiving feast traditions in their own celebrations. This week my youngest called me from NYC wanting the spinach madeleine recipe to make for her friends! It is a recipe quite famous in the Baton Rouge area that has made its way to Georgia, and the  Carolina's as my oldest daughter has shared Thanksgiving with her husband's family. This yummy dish will even travel on the plane to Philedelphia with my sister this week! I'll include the recipe below in case you want to try it out.

I am asking the Father to give me His eyes to see His purpose, behold His beauty and give me a heart that is grateful for the time of quiet this holiday that is unusual for us. We must choose to look for the gifts He has provided in those unexpected ways or circumstances. As I reflect, I realize that my fall season has been very full with voice students, ministry and teaching the Word in Restore Bible studies, travel and caring for my mom and family. It seems that the Lord has orchestrated a time of needed rest for my body and soul that I would not normally choose for myself. For that, I can choose gratitude.

I realize that many of you reading this will experience a Thanksgiving full of activity, cooking, travel, relatives, family and feasting.

In the midst of preparing the food for your holiday feast, consider how you can tend to a feast of thankfulness for your soul.

You’ll never regret the time you spend cultivating a habit of gratitude and praise. Wouldn’t that be a great legacy to leave behind one day! The meaning of our lives doesn't come from how fast we race, how stressed out we are or how perfect we make our holidays. It comes from God and how much He loves us. We can choose to take the slow path and acknowledge that life is a gift...a gift to be given away

Colossians 3:16-17 (NIV) Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

So go ahead, make those gratitude lists each day. You may find that it is a holy habit you want to continue throughout Christmas and into the New Year to keep your heart focused on the blessings in your life, instead of the struggles. Enjoy the feast of turkey and all the trimmings, soak in the laughter, the conversations, the crisp air and vibrant colors of autumn, and then take some quiet moments to reflect. For the wonders of our great God are everywhere. Choose to invest some time building a heart of gratitude, for ultimately it is a path that will lead you to great joy and abundance.

In Louisiana we are finally beginning to see beautiful colors in late November. They are often not as brilliant here as they are in other parts of the world because of our mild climate, but this year the trees are really showing off. The cypress trees are a gorgeous burnt rust and the Pistachio tree in my driveway is brilliantly shimmering gold and orange as I drive down our street. I love all things fall – pumpkins, apple cider, falling leaves and the brilliant golds, oranges and reds the Lord paints in our world. It’s a season for which I am grateful. As I write, my pumpkin spice candle is burning and filling the room with the scent of autumn. Throughout the year, I collect some of my favorite pictures of fall. The colors remind me of the beauty our great God has put on display for us in His creation. They are a visual feast for the eyes. Enjoy the gallery of autumn images and pathways below. They are lined in vibrant colors. As you view them, ask the Father to give your eyes the capacity to see the beauty and wonder in the path where He is leading you in this season of your life. You may find it in unexpected places.
Father, thank you that You are interested in every detail of my life and character. Keep my eyes and my heart focused on You. Help me to slow down, take in the moments, the memories, the joy and the pain in a way that I am filled with gratitude
for You are with me through it all.

Help me not to miss the wonders and beauty You bless me with each day. Give me the courage to follow the path in the direction you are leading me and the strength to dig deeply into the treasure of You in every situation.

Thank you that Your heart is to use any difficulties that I face as an opportunity to see You at work in my life. Thank you that You enrich my life through each problem and situation when I let You use them to expose my need, my sin, or my pride. Thank you that through the difficult seasons You have humbled me and perfected my faith.
You use each circumstance to ultimately bring me
to a place
of greater abundance and a deeper understanding of the depth of Your love.

Thank you for the promises, the truth and the treasure found in Your Word. Keep my heart tender and full of compassion for those in need. Fill my heart so that it overflows
with gratitude for the beauty and grace you have poured into my life.

Father, by your grace, give me Your eyes to see, Your ears to hear,
and a mouth that speaks boldly the praises of my Savior.
For You alone are worthy
of all the honor, glory and praise!

In Jesus Name,
Amen
Wishing you a feast for your soul this holiday,
Kathy

I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
(Psalm 34:1-3,8 ESV)

Spinach Madeleine (adapted from River Road Cookbook)
2 Packages frozen chopped spinach
4 TBL. butter
2 TBL. flour
2 TBL. chopped onion
1/2 cup vegetable liquor (drained from cooked spinach
1/2 tsp. black pepper
3/4 tsp. celery salt
3/4 tsp. garlic salt or fresh chopped garlic
salt to taste
1 pkg. Mexican Velveeta mild cheese (use about 6-8 oz.)
1 tsp. Worcestire sauce
red pepper to taste or Toni's seasoning

(If you cannot find Mexican Velveeta cheese use regular Velveeta and add chopped jalapeño peppers)
Cook spinach according to directions on package. Drain and reserve liquor. Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Add flour, stirring until blended and smooth but not brown. Add onion and cook until soft but not brown. Add liquid slowly, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. cook until smooth and thick; continue stirring. Add seasonings and cheese which has been cut into small pieces. Stir until melted. Combine with cooked spinach. This may be served immediately or put into casserole and topped with butter bread or cracker crumbs. The flavor is improved if the latter is done and kept in fridge overnight. Serves about 8. Freezes well. Enjoy!
